Researchers from the University of Milan, Paulina Kowalicka and Marco Castelli, presented the Smidge Project findings at the Policy & Internet Conference 2024 held at the University of Sydney from October 2 to October 4, 2024. This international conference brought together scholars and experts from around the world to discuss the theme: "Good Internet Policy: How, What, Why, Where, and For Whom?"
As part of the conference, Kowalicka, a researcher at the University of Milan and managing director of the Information Society Law Center, along with postdoctoral researcher Castelli presented their paper titled "Guidelines to Reduce the Spread of Online Extremism and Disinformation Among Middle-Aged Individuals: Insights from SMIDGE Project".
During their presentation, Kowalicka and Castelli highlighted key elements of the SMIDGE project, focusing on two major work packages involving the University of Milan:
Horizon Scanning: Identifying emerging trends and potential risks in the online information landscape.
Stakeholder Research & Policy Development: In-depth analysis and engagement with key stakeholders to develop comprehensive guidelines aimed at reducing the spread of harmful content online.
The research presented was part of WP3 and WP7 of the project, which emphasizes the development of effective policies and guidelines for tackling disinformation and extremism in digital spaces. These insights are expected to provide valuable recommendations for future internet policies aimed at protecting vulnerable online users from harmful content.
